Ok. So I bought this machine for my 6 year old, and I think I have used it more often, but that's only because she's at school! We have made a couple of little bags(like in the directions) and a couple of pillows for her friends. So fun!haha SewFun. anyway-I've been trying to learn to use a sewing machine for awhile now, and I have a very complicated machine that I was intimidated by, after using this machine a couple times(because of simple straight forward directions)I am on my way! Now I can use mine and my daughter's! We have a great time! It's OUR time when we can sit together and use the machine! BTW-she can use it herself without my help, she just needed to practice at first!

I took 2 of the parachutes to rural Honduras for a mission trip. The school children went wild when I brought them out and showed them how to bounce the balls! The kids just loved it. We used them to count in Spanish and in English. Then we used the colors of the parachute to group the balls together. We will be buying more of these to take on every mission trip!

Very happy with the quality of this figure. It's just as great-looking 'in person' as it is in its promotional photo-which seems to be a rare thing nowadays. I'm not sure how durable it is, since all I have it doing is decorating my shelf. Cap comes with a base, pistol, shield(of course), canteen, and knife. My only 'complaint' is that there's only space for either the knife or canteen on Cap's utility belt, and they are a little loose when added. Also, Cap's shield can only be fitted to his arm--it would have been nice to be able to fit it to his back as well, although now I'm just being picky I suppose. This was my first Marvel Select figure, and it won't be my last.

I ordered this product thinking finally a Capt. America figure worth adding to my son's large marvel collection. When it arrived it was a figure without a mask. Totally misrepresented on the website. My advice is that you check with the seller before ordering to be sure you are getting the right one. The rest of the figure was awesome but who wants Capt. America without the cool mask??

Scared look on New Caps Face?? - Grady DA KID - Dorchester, MA USA
The paint work is great but the sculpture of the face is not up to speed. I recommend this figure only because it's the best there is of Cap out there...for now! The arms are rather skinny in porportion to the chest girth too! I would give this figure a 7.5 out of 10. It would have been less if the paint wasn't so superb!

I just got this tea set today, Dec. 23 after ordering it two days ago via Amazon Prime. I couldn't be happier with the colors scheme, I wanted something bright and warm to go with the wooden play kitchen I'm "remodeling" for my 15 month old daughter. So far I haven't seen anything to keep her from playing with this set at her age, although I will closely monitor the bolts that attach handles to the cups. I really haven't done my research on Alex's tin toys manufacturing safety, I normally research everything for several days... this was too cute to worry about it so I'm just going to trust the toy regulations on this one. My intitial two complaints are as follows:

1. The tea pot lid could use some form of stopper to stay in place, with the slightest jostle the lid is knocked out.
2. My particular set has what I would hope is an anomaly - the metal on one half of the kettle is wavy instead of convex.

Everything else is adorable. Before this I'd planned to buy the Green Toys Tea Set, however when it came down to play kitchen color schemes, blue tea cups hanging from the shelf wasn't going to look as cute as red. If you too have been looking at the green toys set, keep in mind that this one is a considerably smaller scale. I'd say the teacups are no bigger than 2 inches in diameter. I was ecstatic to find red and pink polka dots! I'm not a heart person, so I was a little concerned the hearts would be too much. They aren't, they are adorable and perfect for a spunky little girl.

My daughter will get this set with her new kitchen in 28 or so hours, I can't wait!

i spent a lot of time looking over the tea sets offered on amazon and was extremely happy to find this one. i liked the mixture of pinks and reds as well as the hat box for storage. inside there is a tea pot, four cups, four saucers, four plates and a round platter. when opening the package for the first time i realized that the lid for the teapot is extremely small and doesn't fit properly in the pot (if you try to pour it falls out). i contacted the company via email to find if this was typical of their teapots and never received a response. i ended up using scotch tape to secure the lid so that i wouldn't have to fret about my one year old choking on the part or it falling out EVERY time we pour (which is the point of a teapot....right?)

overall i think the pattern and colors in this set are adorable. the fact that it comes with a platter and a way to store the pieces together are bonuses. however, i'm not sure those attributes make it worth what's being charged and the customer service from alex toys was a disappointment.

we also bought the haba black forest cake for added play fun. i highly recommend their fabric food! so well made and pretty too!

I purchased this kit for my seven year old who has never attempted sewing before and she has had a blast! The sewing kit is really nice since it comes with everything needed to complete the projects listed in the project booklet found in the sewing kit. The projects are very easy and my seven year old was able to do everything pretty much by herself thus avoiding frustration. The only complaint I would have about this set is that the scissors it comes with are useless since they are pretty much a toy so make sure your child has a pair of extra scissors handy when using this kit. Said this, I would say that this sewing kit is worth the money and is of a good overall quality.

I bought this for my mature 6 year old. She really liked it for the first 15 minutes, but I ended up having to finish the craft for her. The needle is real and I was a little worried she'd hurt herself. She did drop it a few times and we had to comb the carpet to find it. So it's not the most relaxing craft, but the end result is really cute and I think she'll want to do it again. She says "I think it's a really good present, but it was hard to thread the needle."

I purchased this for my 6 year old daughter, the contents of the kit are nothing more than a travel sewing kit combined with all of worth of sewing supplies. No patterns were including only extremely basic instructions and little more. Included scissors don't work at all. The needles are regular sized needles and not of a large (and dulled type) that one would expect with a "first" sewing kit.

You'd do better to search inside the drawers of your bedside table and odds and end drawer and dump it into a bag than to purchase this useless kit.

There are lots of different associations that can be made with the word "drum." Depending on your age, where in the world you are from and what kind of music you listen to, you may picture anything from a Caribbean steel drum to a Chinese "fou" drum when you hear that word. Yes, there are a great many faces to the instrument commonly known as "drum." But I must admit would be curious to know how many people, when asked what they associate with this word, would come up with the electronic drum.

Whereas a traditional drum of any vintage uses acoustic vibration to produce sound, an electronic drum uses an electronic waveform or sampler. Instead of being an instrument with a shell and a drumhead, these instruments have electronic drum pads. These pads contain either piezoelectric transducers (transducers that use crystals to generate electric potential in response to applied mechanical stress) or force sensitive resistors (two-terminal electronic components that can oppose electric current by producing a voltage drop). While this is perhaps more than most people want to know, the upshot is that when one of these pads is struck, a voltage change is triggered in one of these components. This produces signals that are then transmitted to an electronic drum module, or "drum brain." The brain translates the signals into waveforms, which in turn produce the percussion sound that corresponds to the pad that was struck. So leaving aside all the technical jargon, electronic drums are used exactly like regular drums, except that you have to plug them in first.

Electronic drums have been around since the very early 1970s. Graeme Edge, drummer and songwriter for the band The Moody Blues, and Professor Brian Groves of Sussex University pioneered the first electronic drum kit for the band's 1971 album. This kit and its early kin had a number of flaws, among them the fact that the sound produced was only a very approximate replica of the sound of an actual acoustic drum. As a result, the first electronic drum's first decades were spent in the genres of rock, disco and techno, where they could be used to create a specific beat without having to worry about timbre.

At 127 minutes, "Becoming Jane" is a rather dull and insipid affair, requiring a knowledge of Jane Austen and her work for you to truly appreciate how she 'became Jane' in this film as we don't get much about her life as an author. One of the themes of the film was to instil how Austen created a sense of 'trouble' for her characters before finding what they desired, giving more realism to the romance; it's a shame that the film doesn't ever come close to nailing this point down with the character of Austen herself, despite making a half-hearted attempt to do so. The direction and story never really allow the well assembled cast to do much with any of it and as a result "Becoming Jane" just doesn't resonate.

This film has much in common with "Miss Potter", another film based on the life of a famous authoress. Whereas 'Miss Potter' at least involved you on the story at some emotional level, the story of the young Jane Austen in this film gives you no access. Jane is a fiery girl with a keen intellect and a will to write. She wants to marry for 'affection' nor for 'property' which leads her straight in to the arms of Mr Lefroy, an Irish lawyer who likewise toys with convention, speaking out against it. Their liaison is a short-lived affair, leading to many up and downs before ending without much resolution as the social rules of the time simply didn't allow them to stay together. There's much there to hang a strong, emotional story but it's directed in such an uninspired way that you just don't get pulled in to Austen's plight. In the end, you can only appreciate it if you're familiar with her work and how this story shows its affect on her writing, and if you're not familiar, it's a rather bland story in execution, not altogether different from a soap opera or melodrama you see on television. In some ways, it would have been far more pleasant for the film to take a page out of the book of "Miss Potter" and actually cover all of Austen's life and not just her early years.

One positive for the film is the cast. Anne Hathaway is a surprise as Austen, playing her with a strength and vulnerability, all with a perfect English accent. James McAvoy is perhaps the best actor in the film, playing the character of Lefroy perfectly. The remainder of the cast including James Cromwell, Julie Walters and Maggie Smith do as well as they can with the poor material.

It's hard to pinpoint the exact cause where this all went wrong. The film is too long for a start. Given we are getting the life of the young Jane Austen (ie the first act of a play), a ninety minute film probably would have sufficed. The sequences are not constructed with any sense of narrative drama or depth, giving you no chance to have any interest in what's happening. The camerawork is relagated to hand-held shots for almost all of the film which seems odd for a period piece. All of this comes together to tell a story which only hits plot points but not emotional, or even dramatic ones. It's really not well done at all.

A good cast but the film just isn't any good.

Then it's the parrots turn to be the Trainee. The Trainer then says "hello" to the parrot. The parrot quickly learns to respond the same way the Human Trainee responded to receive a similar reward and praise. The parrot models its behavior based on the Human Trainee to receive the same reward/praise that the Human Trainee received. This method is successfully used in teaching birds, other animals, and humans with learning disabilities.

These are the three most frequently used methods for teaching a pet bird or parrot to talk. The Audio Recordings method is the simplest method to use but also the least effective method. The Parent-Parrot method is the most common method used and is effective. Most talking parrots that you'll encounter learned to talk using this method. The Modeling method is probably the most effective method but also the most difficult due to the requirement of another person. Which method will work best for you and your bird? You won't know until you try them so try them all and have fun with it.

1. She does the little things - No, I'm not talking about your undersized rated R superstar, guys. If you're working, does your girlfriend offer to get you something to eat or maybe stuff to drink? Does she get you random funny toys and trinkets just because? Does she send you messages telling you she misses you? These are a few things that let you know your woman cares. If your woman does this, you might have a keeper. If it's some random girl you don't know and haven't met, then you may have a stalker. Tread cautiously. ;)

2. She waits to have sex with you - There was a time when I thought this was kind of B.S. However, it turns out that if a woman waits to explore the depths of your, errr, loin, then she cares. The woman wants you to know that she thinks your special and wants to wait to share that intimate connection with you. So if you go out with a woman and she won't sleep with you, don't be discouraged, she's probably into you, especially if she keeps agreeing to go out with you. Just be prepared to have your manhood questioned by your "boys."

3. She has a life of her own and it ain't all that bad - You've been there. You've dated that woman; the clingy one. She's more akin to saran wrap on the face or a life sized magnet than a person. Oh yes! You know what I'm talking about. This is the woman that gets pissed off when you want to go out with your buddies and not spend time with her. She can't be alone; she can't NOT be in some type of relationship. That type of woman is insecure and needs to suffocate you for something that she's lacking in her own life. A strong and confident woman will have her own life that she wants to share with you because she wants to, not because she needs to. This is exactly the type of woman that is ideal to be in a relationship with.

4. She makes a hell of a wing man - I'm not talking about the wing man that helps you pick up chicks at the bar, though, that would be kind of hot. I'm just saying. What I mean is that your girl makes you look good in front of your superiors at work at the company parties. She makes you look good in front of your friends, too. That is, when she's not too busy dissin' your bedroom antics. Okay, I'm kidding there; but a gal that is into you wants to help you shine when you need to most. Of course, returning the favor is expected so be warned on telling dick and fart jokes.

5. A good woman knows a good man when she sees one - A woman who knows who she is knows what she deserves and what she's worth. Not in a stuck up way, mind you. Be wary of women that always seem to go after the "bad boy" who mistreats them. A confident woman would rather wait and find a good guy to be with rather than some random turd of a guy just for the sake of being with somebody. It's not wrong to be picky and wait for a good person.

Now, this list isn't all inclusive, nor is it a guideline of what a good girlfriend HAS to be. However, it's something to think about. The five items I mention illustrate a confident woman who is caring, appreciative, sensitive and giving and has respect for herself. You will always hear how beneficial it is for children to be exposed to new people and environments. How they benefit best from having care from a large number of people. But it is generally forgotten how much parents need this same stimulation. That the connection and support we receive from other caregivers is important for our own health and well being as well.

I remember taking my first and only child, Alex, to all sorts of baby centred events; swimming, Gymboree, music, sign language. Soon we were out of the house 5 days a week. I thought that by just escaping the confines of my home the quite and listless mood I was in would change, but it didn't. I was out with my child every day, smiling at other moms all the time and in hindsight I now realize I had no meaningful conversations, no laughter and no emotional bonds with anyone outside my family. I was busy socializing my child forgetting my needs and I didn't know it, but my sense of self was gone.

When I scheduled my first playdate I remember thinking what a great new experience for Alex. I never knew it would be a good experience for me too. A playdate is an unheard of term till one has a child. Traditionally it is where 3 or more "moms" (not exclusively moms anymore) get together to have their children interact. Perfect for my only child, Alex.

I remember this first playdate like it was yesterday. Alex wasn't "in love" with his car seat and cried all the way there. I know I was sleep deprived (still am) and I hadn't had time for a shower, but I did wash my hair and brush my teeth. Two of the many things at the time I was letting slide. But even a bad playdate is beneficial to your emotional health.

Being alone with a baby can bring feelings of isolation, inadequacy and a loss of self that can affect your relationships with your child and other loved ones. So even if I rarely meet my next best friend at a playdate I have left each playdate with topics to think about, mull over and discuss with others. All this provides a stronger connection with who I am as a person. Something that can quietly slip away from us when our focus is largely only external; on the new baby.

Many observers (on the right and left) are increasingly concerned that the Obama administration seems paralyzed when it comes to restoring civil liberties suspended under the Patriot Act, reforming Wall Street and ending the $2.4 trillion unwinnable wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (and Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia) - to say nothing of the looming, but potentially more crippling, energy and climate change crisis. Many are coming to the conclusion that any real solution to these major threats to American civilization will have to be citizen led.

The reality, however, is that any successful citizen led effort must first surmount the major hurdle of getting reliable information about the urgent problems we face - as well as potential solutions - into the public arena. The past decade has witnessed the launch of many fantastic grassroots initiatives around all these issues. All engendered considerable energy and enthusiasm, flourished briefly and then, for the most part, fizzled and died.

The major stumbling block faced by all these grassroots efforts was the de facto corporate censorship that exerts near total control over the issues that reach public attention, and to a large extent, shapes the public response to these issues. A lot has been written recently about the ability of politicians and the public relations (PR) industry to "frame" issues to provoke the response they want from the American public. In fact Karl Rove and other public relations experts openly brag about their ability to provoke a knee jerk reaction from Americans, based on their ability to exploit basic human psychology.

The immense hurdle citizen activists face in presenting an alternative, "anti-corporate" point of view, is that successful "framing" is based on years of very systematic conditioning (i.e. brainwashing) we have all been subjected to from an early age. The US isn't the only country to engage in deliberate deception. For more than thirty years citizens of most industrial countries have been subject to a very sophisticated form of mind control, designed to create and maintain a mindset that promotes corporate interests.

The Birth of the Public Relations Industry

An entire industry, known as public relations, was developed for this purpose. As the late Alex Carey describes in Taking the Risk Out of Democracy, for the most part public relations techniques are based on mass psychology principles first articulated during the campaign by President Woodrow Wilson to "sell" Word War I to a profoundly isolationist American public. The techniques used by Wilson's propagandists were later refined by Heinrich Himler, the propaganda minister who "sold" Hitler's Third Reich to the German people.

By the time the US industrial boom of the early fifties was in full swing, the science of mass brainwashing had advanced to the point that its influence could be seen in all electronic and print advertising, in school textbooks and in the more subtle marketing that occurs in the guise of journalism and news reporting and via the repetition of key ideological messages in films, magazines, books and other mass media.

The Hard Sell

Over the next 10-15 years, a gigantic public relations industry would succeed in totally reframing Americans' attitudes towards their families, their communities and their elected officials - and most importantly towards money. This major attitudinal shift, known in the industry as "consumerism," came about through bombarding Americans with dozens of messages everyday pressuring them to purchase an endless array of products they don't really want or need. Exposure to this continual conditioning has earned the US the distinction of the highest level of personal indebtedness in the world. In February 2010 it was $2.5 trillion or $35,014 per household.

Prior to World War II, there was a strong expectation that working class families would postpone buying cars and major appliances until they had enough money in savings to cover the full purchase price. In households where there was no disposable income (where the weekly paycheck was just enough to cover bare necessities), people could only afford major purchases by scrimping on basic living expenses (for example reducing meat consumption or buying second hand clothing, linens, kitchenware and small appliances), by taking in boarders or laundry or by borrowing small amounts from relatives.

Playing on Americans' Deepest Insecurities

By the early sixties, thanks to a decade of psychologically sophisticated advertising, this attitude had drastically changed. Now instead of saving for major purchases that were once considered luxuries (cars, dishwashers, garbage disposals, deep freezers, washers, dryers and air conditioners), families felt a strong expectation to borrow the money to buy them.

The "pressure" American consumers feel to buy merchandise they can't really afford is based on two powerful psychological messages. The first plays on instant gratification as an entitlement. The advertising industry has been putting out different versions of the slogan "You're worth it" for several decades. The second group of messages play on basic human insecurities about being viewed as inferior and rejected by peers and/or the opposite sex. In a way the public relations industry has reduced American adults to perpetual teenagers - by continuously appealing to the overwhelming peer pressure that is a normal phase of adolescent development.

While modern conveniences, such as dishwashers, garbage disposals, deep freezers, washers, dryers and air conditioners definitely reduce the drudgery of housework, they aren't in the strictest sense necessities. However through slick advertising designed to play on peoples' insecurities, the public relations industry has succeeded in convincing the majority of Americans these expensive energy saving appliances are as essential to modern living as food, clothing and shelter. Over time the range of items considered to be "necessities" has expanded to include a myriad of electronic toys that in no way relate to survival needs, such as color TVs, stereo systems, cassette and video recorders, personal computers CD and DVD players, cordless phones, cell phones, laptops, blackberries, ipods, palm pilots, and digital cameras.

Targeting Women for the Hard Sell

When substantial numbers of women entered the work force, corporations and the advertising industry went after this new source of disposable income by launching the appearance industry. Whereas previously only women who belonged to the wealthy elite could afford to follow the dictates of fashion gurus, suddenly there was enormous pressure for minimum wage office workers to purchase a brand new wardrobe every season. This was immediately followed by a giant cosmetics industry that markets billions of dollars of make-up, hair, skin and nail products, teeth whiteners, breath fresheners by terrifying women - and increasing numbers of men - that without these products they will never attract the opposite sex.

Following the enormous success of the cosmetics industry, corporate America launched first the diet industry and finally the cosmetic surgery industry. In addition to marketing sexual attractiveness, these new industries even more successfully marketed thinness and fear of aging. Their success in convincing hundreds of millions of women world wide to hate their bodies is directly responsible for the epidemic of (often fatal) anorexia nervosa - a condition that is virtually unknown in the third world.

How the PR Industry Shapes Attitudes and Beliefs

Aside from the psychological hard sell tactics used in direct advertising, the public relations (PR) industry has also played a major role in reshaping our ideological beliefs. In fact there seems to have been a deliberate effort to convert Americans from thoughtful participants in a democratic society to passive, mindless consumers. It should come as no surprise that the PR industry has a long and interesting relationship with US intelligence. Unlike totalitarian regimes like the former Soviet Union or Hitler's Germany, the US has no Ministry of Propaganda. However the CIA does have a supposedly "top secret" Office of Public Information which plays a major role in "planting" news stories favorable to American strategic interests in mainstream media outlets. The operation is "top secret" as it is technically illegal. Federal law explicitly prohibits the CIA from operating on US soil.

However the collaboration of the first CIA director Allen Dulles and Washington Post founder and publisher Philip Graham launched to launch Operation Mockingbird in 1948 is a matter of public record. Their stated goal was to both recruit and "plant" CIA-friendly journalists at both wire services (AP- Associated Press and UPI - United Press International), Time, Newsweek, and US News and World Report, as well as several metropolitan dailies.

CIA-linked Foundations also Fund the Left

Sherman Skolnick was the first investigative reporter to unearth CIA links to the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the other major foundations who fund the predominant progressive and left-oriented magazines. It's actually quite an ingenious strategy on the part of the CIA to fund both the right and left wing perspective on popular issues. It explains why much of the independent research on major government conspiracies, such as 9-11 and the JFK assassinations, is marginalized by the "official" left. It also explains why none of these periodicals ever explore Gloria Steinem's (well documented) career in US intelligence or her role in the creation of a domestic intelligence operation to plant agents posing as radical feminists grassroots women's and black liberation organizations.

Other Sources of Government Propaganda

The Pentagon and FBI have their own public relations divisions responsible for churning out propaganda (there is now a Pentagon Channel). Obviously the primary focus of Pentagon and FBI propaganda is to promote popular support for American military goals and for draconian laws that suppress popular opposition to these goals. However this is not a simple matter of inserting anti-terrorist and pro-war messages into the nightly news and crime and spy dramas. The government and their public relations experts are also responsible for an increasing number of related messages that serve to distract the public away from the urgent issues that confront us.

Anti-civil Liberties Messages - fear inspiring messages used to make Americans so fearful of imminent terrorist attack that they willingly surrender their own civil liberties to prevent it. Both Bush and Obama have used similar messages to convince the American public to surrender their right to habeas corpus (guarantees review by a judge whenever anyone is detained by law enforcement), their protection against warrant less search and seizure, government surveillance of phone conversations and emails, torture and extrajudicial assassination of so-called terrorists (unfortunately this could potentially include anyone who criticizes the government, as there is no burden to prove the victim's guilt). It is also common for crime and espionage dramas (24 and Without a Trace, which both employ Pentagon consultants, are good examples) to portray warrants and non-violent interrogation techniques as an "inconvenience" and a threat to public security.

Messages promoting fear of dark skinned people - take the form of anti-immigrant hysteria directed against Hispanic immigrants from Mexico (who are portrayed as welfare cheats and a threat to American jobs) and dark skinned people from Middle East and Asia (who are portrayed as potential terrorists). However there continues to be a disproportionate portrayal of African Americans as angry, violent and criminally inclined, both in unbalanced news reporting and racial stereotypes in TV and film entertainment.

Messages promoting American exceptionalism - carefully conceal corporate interference with elections and the legislative process (all the perks - gifts, meals, cocktail parties, free trips and free use of corporate aircraft - corporate lobbyists dispense as an inducement for favorable legislation). They also systematically concealed the massive electoral fraud which occurred in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections.

Messages promoting disengagement from the political process because it's too complicated and too corrupt - based mainly around the name, blame and shame focus that dominates political reporting. Americans are most likely to hear their lawmakers mentioned in the mainstream media as a result of immoral, illegal or unethical contact. However this message is mainly driven home via distraction - by making other aspects of modern life (such as Tiger Wood's infidelity) vastly more prominent than demanding a voice in whether the US gives two trillion dollars in bail outs to banks or engages in an unwinnable war in the Middle East

There was a place in my life where I was in deep thought about what I was doing to change the world. My husband was amazing and I had three beautiful boys, a great home based business I enjoyed and I still did not feel I was changing the world. I felt a strong necessity for parents to come forward for kids did not have any. I made the decision to take in a child myself because after all, I was not a bad parent.

We started on our quest for an international child. Our choice was a Russian boy to add to our growing family of boys. The orphanages are packed with males and sprinkled with a few girls. We received pictures of boys around the ages of four to ten and we set out finding the one we wanted. We grew close to a young boy around the age of five. His name was Alex. He came from the farthest corner of Russia and was said to be a healthy little boy. We sent the money for the fee out directly.

Mounds of papers were sent for us to fill to perfection and have notarized. Some had to carry a seal that shows that the notary we used was legal. The papers were mailed back and more would come in. The cycle would start all over again. Blood tests were due every three months. Our fingerprints were taken and we had a background check done. A homestudy was also necessary. It was requires that we show proof of marriage, the money we made, and we sent in all the forms they asked for.

We got many different emotions from those around us. One individual would be happy about it while another individual would think we were not doing the right thing. The photo that was sent the first time was the only one we were allowed to have. It was explained that the Russians thought we were crazy and should appreciate what we were getting. This photo was now two years old. More time went by and we did not move for a vacation or even think about new jobs because we never knew when we were leaving for Russia.

Finally, the telephone rang and the agency we were using notified us of the need for us to go to Russia within a week's time. This was the same week as Christmas. Our travels would take us away from our family and children to meet our new son for the first time. We were skeptical about it because of not knowing if this was right or not. What had we done? This child might bring something to our family that we had not expected!

It took us over twenty-five hours to arrive. We were put into a van and drove down an icy road to a secluded Siberian building. It took over five hours to reach it. This was to be the orphanage that our Alex stayed in with about sixty other children. The room we were escorted to was a bright green room with large chairs. As we were trying to be patient, the women that were there took off down the hall in a hurry.

All the excitement and travel had really started to creep upon us. It was eighteen hours later than it was at home. We still were amazed that we were in this place.

Finally, the door swung open and a big Russian woman entered with a tiny little boy holding her hand. He was not five as Alex was supposed to be but only about three years old. He was dressed in a shirt and shorts that did not fit him and was not clean at all. This building was very hot and we were dressed in winter apparel. This tiny boy stole our hearts immediately. He said help in Russian. My husband hugged him so tightly, they placed him on his lap, and in no time at all, Alex was laughing aloud.

For three days, we stayed in a very small hotel room with almost nothing in it except for a bed and a chair. In addition, a bathtub did not have clean water. The Russians that were taking care of us asked if we could find someone to take their older sister at an orphanage here. We got as much information as we could about her with the desire to help her. It was soon time to leave our Alex and come home with only a few pictures of him. When we returned, the papers were piling up for us to sign and return. More blood tests were needed. We were waiting until the time we could go back for the official court.

Of course, it was longer than the three months. In that time, we made the choice to adopt his older sister also. This time, we visited in the scorching summertime. Nothing seemed to go right for us. Not only did it take prayers from all around by only God could help us return with these children. It was something we were supposed to do. It was not a simple thing to complete this Russian adoption. God does not give us the option to have things made easy if they are gifted to us.

My 2 1/2 year daughter and her 20 month friend loved the plate bugs. The finished projects were so cute that we used them in our daughter's room for decoration. The glue stick is worthless on this project however just regular Elmer's glue worked well. One thing I did was glue on major pieces such as legs and let them dry before the kids finished the project. Otherwise they were tempted to pull off the pieces. I am going to purchase more of the Alex Art Series projects. They are delightful and keep the kids entertained for up to an hour at a time.

Alex Little Hands Paper Plate Bugs - Mom of Two -
Unlike the sticker art, my three year old LOVED this kit and the projects it contained. Although the paste is mediocre (and some of the pieces that were glued didn't stay glued), she enjoyed every single bug. This kit is almost as good as the Alex Little Hands paper bag puppets. Now if Alex Little Hands made another two or three projects boxes, it'd be great.

The cuteness factor is huge. I'm not sure what the educational value of this toy is though. If you are looking for some type of arts and crafts activity that your child can really learn from, I suggest spend your money elsewhere. I used it solely as a "rainy-day" no-mess project for my 3 y.o. boy. Even then it was of somewhat limited use - he would put a few stickers on here and there and try to glue some parts together, but would get bored with the process since it's, well, a no-mess one. He was, however, absolutely thrilled with the end results. Speaking of "trying to glue parts together" - the glue stick enclosed with the kit is absolutely inadequate (as is pretty much any other gluestick I tried on this project). It simply doesn't hold the paper plates together and the googly eyes don't stick either. I ended up using lots and lots of scotch tape and even glue gun (for the eyes and buttons). Which kind of makes the kit difficult for 3-5 year olds. That was my biggest disappointment with this set.

Science based toys such as microscopes and chemistry sets are a great way to learn about the world around us. We learn underlying scientific principles whilst we play, sometimes without even noticing. There are many science toys on the market but in my opinion the best educational toys are the ones you can make yourself.

The first science toy I ever made was the old favorite 'Plastic Cup Telephone'. I first saw this on Blue Peter and it consisted of two plastic cups with a taut string joining them, the idea was that when somebody talked into one of the cups the vibrations would travel down the taut string and into the other plastic cup where the vibrating cup would cause the air in and around it to also vibrate, and so recreating the original sound waves.

This is not much different from how a real telephone works except that electric current replaces the vibrating string in a real telephone. The string phone I made back then worked well enough and filled me with pride as my brother and I relayed secret messages to one another much to the annoyance of our little sister. But this vibrating string method had a rather serious drawback, the string needed to be taut and allowed to vibrate without anything touching it. And since this meant that it could not be used around corners our efforts to communicate from bedroom to bedroom came to nothing, however we did learn quite bit about science that day.

I have made many more science toys [http://www.sciencetoy.co.uk] since that one, and have recently made another telephone which does not share the cup and string cornering disadvantages, I call it the speakerphone, and it is surprisingly easy to make.

To make a speakerphone you will need two speakers from an old stereo or a pair of old car speakers, preferably with a small amount of speaker wire still on them.

Purchase a roll of speaker wire or similar two core cable, and use this to join the two speakers together, terminal to terminal using either solder, or if you managed to leave a small amount of the original wires in place, simply strip the wires back about 10mm and twist them together with the new wire, taping over later with insulating tape.

After this you should have the + terminal of speaker 1 connecting to the + terminal of speaker 2 and also the - terminal of speaker 1 to the - terminal of speaker 2.

Your speakerphone is complete! Now as you speak directly into a speaker, the sound waves from your voice cause the speaker cone to vibrate, as this vibrates it causes a small copper coil to vibrate over a magnet generating an electric current in the wire. This current travels through the speaker wire to the other speaker. As the current runs through the small copper coil at this end it turns the coil into an alternating magnet, which due to its proximity to a large permanent magnet begins to vibrate in exactly the same way as the first coil which generated the current in the first place. This coil is attached to the speaker cone so causes the cone to vibrate which in turn causes the air to vibrate recreating our original sound wave.

I purchased this for my daughter for her 5th birthday. She loves to do crafts. These were easy to do and she was able to do most of them on her own which she liked a lot. I only gave it 3 stars for durability because some of the pieces would come apart after gluing them. She had to re glue some pieces a few times.
